The Pome Gnome

Custom Poems by Stephen K. Scott

How it Works

Get a custom poem written for you!

The fee is based mostly upon the length of the poem.

Should you desire to get a custom poem written the parameters will be discussed and an agreement reached. A meeting between the poet and person commissioning the poem will be set up to discuss the subject and reach consensus on the tone and style of the poem. This should be done in person, if possible, although it could conceivably be done via phone and email if the ordering party is in another city. A tentative completion date will also be established at this time, especially if there is a deadline such as a wedding or specific event date.

From this point information on the subject of the poem will be gathered (a form is available for this purpose), whether a person, organization or event. Facts, key dates, personality traits, family members, interesting and funny stories are all very useful in creating a special and highly individualized work. The poet will consult frequently with the ordering party during the creative process to ensure accuracy and to obtain any additional information required. The poet will submit a first draft and one free edit will be allowed before final delivery.

WHAT IS A “POME GNOME?”

THE “POME” GNOME is the nom de plume and business name for Stephen Scott, an energetic retiree and creative person who writes poetry. He says he has inherited a family trait that he terms “rhyming couplet disorder” and is well known for creating a myriad of poems ranging from spontaneous to epic. The conscious misspelling of the word poem is a play-on-words to describe the style of his epic biographical poems that are witty, folksy and whimsical and filled with wry humor. His style is a product of childhood influences from authors A.A. Milne, James Whitcomb Riley, Edward Lear, Ogden Nash, Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss) and newsman Charles Osgood.

Willing to accept a limited number of commissions per year, he will create a poem that is uniquely personal and suitable for milestone birthdays, funeral eulogies, anniversaries, retirements, roasts or even corporate celebrations.

Let him create a special verse for your loved one, friend or cherished family member. The process is easy to follow and the fee is quite reasonable.

Who is the Pome Gnome? About Stephen K. Scott

Stephen K. Scott, the “Pome Gnome” often says that he “can’t stop his brain,” nor the rhyming and often catches himself answering people in “verse.” You could envision him as a literary troll crafting clever ditties down in a Hobbit Hole. On commissioned poems, he spends much time with the person he is writing about and has an uncanny ability to really capture the essence of the person on paper.

The idea for having a “poems for hire” business sprung from the fact he simply cannot stop rhyming – it is a part and parcel of his fabric. Also his life story poems have been so popular with family and friends, there arose a demand from other people for personalization of their stories.

ODE TO THE AFRICA HOUSE

We know a little secret place, way out River Road,

Hidden from the tax assessor, near the Bucky Bowles abode.

You can hear distant jungle drumming, and the Howler monkey’s wail,

And catch the pungent whiff, of elephant dropping on the trail.

Bwana Bill stands by the door, looking freshly pressed,

Peterman would be proud, and we too are impressed.

Miss Nancy tends a boiling pot, stirring up something new,

And we can’t wait to get a taste, of Ouagadougou stew.

The thought appeared quite simply, while on a Safari trek,

But grew and grew like Topsy, it made them quite a wreck.

Under the stars on the Savanna, was such a thrilling thing,

They sought to capture the feeling, this experience can bring.

Bwana Bill bagged some mighty creatures, some treasures to enthrall,

And brought the skins and horns back, to hang upon the wall.

So they met with architects and planners, and many others too,

To create a thing of wonder; a Taxidermy Zoo.

From a small pine barren in the front yard, the thing began to rise,

And the wonder of it all, is still a grand surprise.

The building’s quite amazing; the workmanship can’t be beat,

With heart pine & dowel construction, it’s an architectural feat.

The colorful artifacts, provide a continental tour,

With many masks & trinkets, from Tanganyika to Bujumbura.

So gather your pith helmet, elephant gun and mosquito net,

And wrangle an invitation, to join the trendy set.

If traveling to the Dark Continent, was ever your intent,

You can simply visit Africa House, and you will be content.
